Travel Guide: Best Island Vacations to Take

There’s something romantic about traveling to an island. The seclusion, the relative isolation, the water all around you. But with literally hundreds of thousands of islands dotting the globe, choosing which one is the right one for you can seem a little overwhelming. Do you want to opt for the affluent but relaxed environs of Martha’s Vineyard? Or the midwestern throwback of Michigan’s Mackinac Island? The Bahamas? Fiji? Spitsbergen? If you wanted to, you could spend the rest of your days island hopping. Luckily, you don’t have to (unless that’s your thing). We’ve curated this list of the best go-to island destinations on the map. Pack your bags and let’s go!

Tahiti

French Polynesia

The largest of the 118 islands that comprise French Polynesia, Tahiti is famous for its pristine beaches, crystal clear waters and near-legendary French cuisine. The island is a snorkeler and diver’s paradise, with bright and stunning coral reefs and water that’s teeming with everything from manta rays to sharks. There is also plenty of hiking available, with treks that take you through lush forests with spectacular waterfalls. And, as we noted, the food is worth the trip alone, with exotic dishes that infuse tradition Polynesian cooking with the best of French cuisine. Try the poisson cru, a Polynesian twist on ceviche, to see what we’re talking about.

Santorini

Greece

One of Greece’s most visually striking islands, Santorini has long been heralded as dream getaway for romantics. With its breathtaking sunsets, gorgeous architecture and delicious food and wine, it’s easy to see why. Wherever you go on the island, you’re afforded a stunning view, with the bright blue ocean contrasting with the brilliant white buildings. There are also water sports and lots of hiking for the more adventure-minded travelers.

Capri

Italy

Beautiful beaches, gorgeous waters, celebrity sightings and delectable food are just some of the draws to this Italian island located off the Sorrentine Penninsula. A resort location since the days of the Roman Empire, Capri is the kind of destination made for Instagram posts. The island’s picturesque harbor, the romantic town of Anacapri, and the Blue Grotto (a cave illuminated by blue light from the sun hitting the water) are just some of the things that keep people returning to this idyllic retreat.

Turks and Caicos

British Overseas Territory

Gorgeous pink-and-white beaches, clear waters and friendly locals are some of the reasons that Turks and Caicos remains a go-to destination for travelers everywhere. It also offers some top-notch snorkeling, with a reef that affords swimmers with up-close encounters with everything from turtles and manta rays to tropical fish and even a whale or two. Additionally, of the forty islands that make up Turks and Caicos, only eight of them are actually inhabited. Take a boat trip and

Phuket

Thailand

A popular tourist and backpacker destination for decades, Phuket has long lured people in with its white sand beaches and turquoise waters. But this island gem also offers tons of opportunities for sailing, snorkeling and diving. Additionally, there are lots of little islands hidden throughout that enterprising adventure seekers will want to make time to explore.

Azores

Portugal

Comprised of nine volcanic islands off the coast of Portugal and about 1,200 miles from Newfoundland, the Azores are an unspoiled treasure sitting in the Atlantic ocean. Because of their remote location, there is virtually no tourism and the island is comparatively untouched. It is also home to a wide variety of natural wonders, from waterfalls to hot springs and geysers. There are also a number of small towns to pique your curiosity and lots of opportunities for whale and dolphin watching along the island’s stunning coastlines.

Kauai

Hawaii

Really, any trip to Hawaii is bound to be worth your investment, but visitors to the Aloha State pretty much unanimously agree that Kauai is the star of the show. Why Kauai, you ask? The hiking along the island’s famous Kalalau Trail is one of the most grueling and rewarding in the world, offering a 22-mile round trip with incredible views and hidden beaches along the way. For those who’d rather take it easy, they can always chill at Hanalei Bay and enjoy the gorgeous beach and unbeatable sunsets.

Orkney Islands

Scotland

Traveling through this chain of islands off the Scottish coast, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time. For example, you can walk through Skara Brae, an ancient settlement that outdates the pyramids of Egypt. You can also gaze upon the Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar, a pair of Neolithic stone circles straight out of a Tolkien novel. However, ancient ruins is only part of Orkney’s charm. If you’re into diving, Scapa Flow is littered with wrecks from all eras, as well as a host of marine life from seals to sea urchins. And, if you visit at the right time of year, you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis, or the Mirrie Dancers, as the locals call them, adding the perfect touch of magic to your Scottish retreat.

Sanibel

Florida

Florida has a reputation for being a little loud and a lot gaudy in some spots, but Sanibel Island and its neighbor, Captiva, are as peaceful and serene as they come. But what really makes Sanibel stand out are the shells. The beaches all over the island are literally made up of these treasures that wash in from the sea. All throughout the day, visitors can see beachcombers bending down to scoop up a handful of shells in what has famously become known as the “Sanibel Stoop.” And don’t worry about the island running out. The spectacular storms that pass through the region always bring more!

Hvar

Croatia

Not only one of the most beautiful island in Croatia, Hvar has earned the reputation as being one of the most beautiful in the world. The island has several beaches, some sandy, others made up of pebbles and stones, as well as boat trips around the picture-perfect Havr harbor. The restaurants serve delicious Mediterranean cuisine, as well as some traditional Croatian dishes like gregada, a stew made from fish, potatoes and onions. There’s also a happening nightlife, with clubs like Venernada (housed inside a Venitian fortress) featuring live music from local performers and DJs. The history minded can also visit Grapčeva špilja , a well-preserved Neolithic cave dwelling. Whatever you’re interested in, Hvar has you covered!
